------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

Nearly my entire career has been devoted to civil service, and I have had the honor working within government at the local, state, and federal level in career positions as well as an appointee. As a career attorney at DOJ, a staffer on the Hill, and now as the Labor Secretary I continue to believe that those who answer the call of public service find one of the most rewarding career paths possible.

My career path would likely not have been possible without the mentors I gained at each step and the opportunities I had to move within the government through detail assignments.

So I’m thrilled to be able to deliver on an idea that came up during the virtual town hall meeting we did back in February to create a central repository for short-term assignments and details throughout the department.

The Repository of Opportunities – Assignments & Details (ROAD) allows managers to post opportunities and employees to take advantage of them. It encourages transparency in the process, promotes the agile workforce we need to be successful in our mission, and enhances professional development.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of this resource and these opportunities. You can get started now on LaborNet at http://labornet.dol.gov/me/hr/road.htm.

Sincerely,

Tom Perez
U.S. Secretary of Labor
